The LIV Council meets 12 times a year to consider matters of importance to members, the legal profession and the community.

The October 25 Council meeting was a held in conjunction with the Southern Solicitors Law Association at the Bentleigh Club. About 70 practitioners from the local area attended the event which happens annually. Council meetings with suburban and regional law associations are important events on the LIV calendar, providing an opportunity for directors to hear directly from members and also communicate information and news.
The special guest speaker was Justin Toohey, CEO of the Legal Practitioners Liability Committee [LPLC]. He spoke on ‘Insurance and risk update and perspective’. A full report on his presentation will be communicated in LawNews.

In other business;

  • LIV president Belinda Wilson gave a general update on the LIV.
  • CEO Adam Awty gave an update on operational matters at the LIV.
  • Mr Awty discussed the strategic partnership with the Victorian Legal Services Board [VLSB].
  • Mr Awty reported on the town hall PEXA meeting at the LIV earlier in the day. The LIV in conjunction with Land Use Victoria, State Revenue Office and PEXA is preparing written responses to questions asked by our members at the town hall meeting and to those compiled by our members The Q&A will be distributed in November via LawNews and be on the LIV website.
  • Councillors received the monthly finance and membership reports.
  • There was discussion about the Law Council of Australia [LCA] Executive election, and the proposed eligible nominees from Victoria.
  • Councillors received an LIV election update. 15 candidates successfully nominated, with the election live from October 29. Office bearer roles were discussed. An election for the position of Vice President will be held at the Annual General Meeting on November 21.
  • Nominations were received for the Takeovers Panel. Councillors received an update on the fitout of the new LIV headquarters at 140 William Street. The move is scheduled for December.
  • The LIV annual report for 2017-18 was approved for publication on October 29.
