Addiction requires compassion

Addiction requires compassion

By Carolyn Ford

Health Judgment Justice Wellbeing

Victoria’s judges have been urged to show compassion when dealing with addicted accused by a leading Canadian physician and author visiting Melbourne. People with addictions were seeking an escape from previous trauma and should receive sympathy and assistance when they come into contact with the justice system, said Dr Gabor Maté. Dr Maté was talking to ABC All in the Mind radio journalist, Lynn Malcolm, about causes of addiction and its impact before an audience of judges and magistrates attending the Law and Literature series at the Judicial College of Victoria last week. The addictions expert has worked extensively with disadvantaged communities on Vancouver’s east side and is the author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction.
