Food Berto’s 180 William Street It seems like only yesterday that the street front location at the bottom of Menzies Chambers was occupied by Ilia café, a happening place for the legal set. But for a handful of years since the space has been filled by Berto’s, a modern, casual Italian eatery. The interior is a little glum with polished concrete floors, uncovered, laminated tables and barely adequate lighting. The space is rescued by large blackboards across the far wall and a retaining pillar on which a promising menu is set out in scrawling handwriting. The entrée menu lacks the antipasto platter that I was hoping for, so we head straight to main course. Today’s fish is barramundi ($35), very well cooked with crispy skin and moist flesh, paired nicely with garlicky wilted baby spinach and cubes of lightly dressed roasted beetroot and borlotti beans. Pumpkin gnocchi ($27) is excellent, with a perfectly toothsome texture and a sweet but well balanced sauce flavoured with wine, shallots, sage and other fresh herbs. We try both desserts: cheesecake ($14.90) consists of a slightly too hard and thick biscuit base, a layer of sweetened mascarpone and fresh passionfruit, and is tasty enough but in my opinion overpriced; and espresso panna cotta ($11.90), beautifully set, with nice biscotti crumbs and a crisp, delicate tuille.
