LIV calls for refugee movement

LIV calls for refugee movement

By Law Institute Journal

Asylum Human Rights

The LIV is saddened by the death of a refugee man on Nauru in April from self-immolation. Iranian refugee Omid Masoumali, 23, died during a monitoring mission by the UNHCR to the island where he had been held since seeking asylum. Another refugee, 21-year-old Somalian woman Hodan Yasin was critically burned in a Nauru detention centre in the same week having been returned from Australia the previous week. In response to the horrific self-harm incidents, the LIV joins the UNHCR in calling for the immediate movement of refugees and asylum seekers to safe and humane living conditions.
