To be a jack of all trades or a master of one? Becoming an expert in a niche area has paid off for these lawyers. These lawyers all focus on one area of law, and it's a strategy that's paying off. They get to practise law they're passionate about, and it turns out that even seemingly rarefied areas like animal law and sports law can deliver enough business to keep their niche law firms busy. The growing trend of boutique firms focusing on a particular client, industry or area of law was one of Thomson Reuters' "Seven Top Trends Disrupting the Legal Industry" in its 2016 State of the Legal Market report in collaboration with Melbourne Law School. Boutique practices can offer clients high quality service based on their accumulated experience in a relevant area, the report noted. The keys to success as a niche lawyer are focused marketing, tireless networking and becoming a recognised expert in your field. These lawyers explain why and how they do it. Brett Melke – animal law As someone who roamed the streets after school looking for dogs to befriend, animal lawyer Brett Melke says he finally found his dream job. "I was always obsessed with animals, especially dogs, and it has been a fantastic thing to be able to practise full-time in this area."
