Ethics Technology

Lawyer Fabian Horton is the winner of the 2017 Rogers Legal Writing Award with his feature “Law, technology and new ethics,” which was published in the June 2016 Technology and the Law special issue of the LIJ. Mr Horton is principal of virtual law firm, ConnectLaw, and a lecturer in practical legal training at the College of Law Victoria. He is also on the LIV’s Technology and the Law Committee and contributes to the LIJ’s technology column. In his thoughtful and persuasively written feature, Mr Horton wrote that as technology develops and more decisions are made by machines, lawyers could be forgiven for thinking that many aspects of ethics will fade away. But, he writes, with these new technologies come new ethical challenges and opportunities. The award, which is chosen from about 70 peer-reviewed features in 11 editions of the LIJ in 2016 and carries prizemoney of $1000, was announced at the 13th Victorian Legal Awards on 19 May.
