Law Council of Australia Update

The Law Council of Australia (LCA) publishes a fortnightly newsletter highlighting current issues important to the LCA including human rights, access to justice and the advancement of the profession. The 19 April edition includes the Call to Parties ahead of the federal election. Each edition contains a list of LCA advocacy including submissions and consultations, media releases, key coverage in the media and upcoming events.

Court Services Victoria – Transcripts and judgments

The Court Services Victoria website provides information on obtaining transcripts for both criminal and civil matters as well as judgments made by courts and tribunals. The Victorian Government Reporting Service provides recordings and transcripts of criminal cases (for a fee that can only be waived under direction of a judge) while civil transcripts are provided by Auscript or private transcription companies. The site also provides links to court websites to assist in accessing court judgments that are not published online.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) website contains a register of Australian registered charities. It is free to search, with each listing showing the purposes of the charity, the names of people involved in its running, as well as reporting and financial information. Further, each entry notes if any action has been taken by the ACNC for non-compliance of obligations. You can search by charity name, ABN or charity location.

Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents print on demand service

The Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents website now has a print on demand service for the latest authorised version of all current Principal, Public Acts and Statutory Rules. Once you have located the latest authorised version of the legislation you require, click “Buy printed copy of Act/SR”. Fair Work Commission – Other languages by document

The Fair Work Commission is Australia’s national workplace relations tribunal. It provides resources on its website in languages other than English to assist non-English speaking applicants and respondents. There are guides, fact sheets and flowcharts, including the unfair dismissal flowchart, to help people better understand the process and make it seem less daunting. Languages include Greek, Spanish, Indonesian and Vietnamese.

Fair Work Commission – Benchbooks

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) contains a section on benchbooks. These are plain language guides to fair work legislation to assist parties prepare material for matters before the FWC. Topics include unfair dismissal, anti-bullying, agreement making and industrial action. The benchbooks consider how legislation and caselaw has been applied in relevant decisions. The page also provides links to external resources on the internet.
