The law is everyone’s business

By Arthur Moses SC

Access to Justice

In this election year the LCA will speak up for society’s marginalised and disadvantaged, who all too often fall through the cracks. Snapshot: The LCA’s policy priorities in 2019 include: increased funding and access to legal aid constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians an independent federal judicial commission to promote transparency and accountability for judges adequate resourcing of chronically underfunded federal courts. The LCA opposes the merger of the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court. It was the inimitable former High Court judge Michael Kirby who observed: “The protection of our liberties does not ultimately depend on parliaments or even the courts. It depends on the love of the people for liberty”. As we enter an election year it is important to take stock of these poignant words.
