Recent legislative amendments in Victoria do not adequately address “repeat offender” issues plaguing the effectiveness of biodiversity laws. Snapshot: Australia has elaborate biodiversity conservation laws but they are failing to slow or reverse biodiversity decline. Issues plaguing the effectiveness of biodiversity laws are well documented but they are not being adequately addressed by legislatures. Victoria’s 2018 review of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 was a missed opportunity to comprehensively address issues impacting the effectiveness of biodiversity laws and arrest biodiversity decline.
