Law Week 2016

Law Week 2016

By Law Institute Journal

Law Week 2016 (16-22 May) has more than 100 events – mostly free – for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. On 20 May, the LIV is hosting a lunchtime panel discussion, led by High Court judge Patrick Keane, asking “What can we learn from the past to prepare us for the future”. Other panellists are former LIV, LCA and LawAsia president Dr Gordon Hughes and Nest Legal principal Laura Vickers. The event will be chaired by 2015 LIV president Katie Miller. On 19 May, the LIV will stage a mock trial in the Banco Court at the Supreme Court. And on the evening of 20 May, the LIV hosts the Law Institute of Victoria Awards, a gala event when the legal profession gathers to celebrate its high achievers. Law Week, organised by the Victoria Law Foundation, is the legal sector’s largest community event. In 2015, almost 7500 people attended. Bound to be popular is “Parole: you decide”, which is part of Courts Open Day, when state and federal courts open their doors to the public on 21 May. The Adult Parole Board can be seen in action in a mock sitting at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. In “Courts, media and public opinion – who’s leading who?” ABC Radio host Jon Faine and Sentencing Advisory Council chair Professor Arie Freiberg join members of the judiciary to discuss this vexed question.
