CLC cuts to hit legal services

CLC cuts to hit legal services

By Law Institute Journal

Access to Justice

Federal funding cuts to community legal centres (CLCs) are threatening severe reductions to services and even the closure of some centres. The federal government is not renewing a four-year funding program for the CLC sector that was introduced by the previous Labor government in 2013 and is due to terminate in June 2017, effectively cutting 30 per cent from the budget of CLCs. The Eastern Community Legal Centre has announced it will have to close its Yarra Ranges Centre established in 2015 to provide legal assistance and education for vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in the region, including Indigenous clients with complex needs and women escaping family violence.
