Going it alone

Courts Litigation

More options are needed to support a growing number of people having to face court unrepresented. In the County Court, Mark Ballantyne is fighting to save his home after defaulting on what should have been a short-term commercial loan. Unable to refinance the $75,000 loan he took out to shore up his struggling restaurant venture, he is being sued by the lender for repayment plus another $67,000 in interest charged at 4.5 per cent a month since early 2015. He has no assets other than his former housing commission home in Mornington. It is a highly uneven contest.
