Mentoring Q&A

Mentoring Q&A

By Law Institute Journal

Mentor. Pat O’Shannessy. Why be a mentor? I learn so much from my mentees. I get a fresh perspective on so many things including the way the tech savvy operate. Also, when explaining something I often find I don’t know it as well as I thought and that spurs me on to look it up again for my own benefit. So much of lawyering is “the loneliness of the long distance runner” and sharing the slings and arrows of legal practice is wonderful. How does experience help? Whether it is figuring out a complex legal conundrum or learning to milk a cow or ride a horse, listening to someone who has done it before helps. Best advice given? “Look at the big picture (because the judge will).” Who was your mentor? David Brown QC. He drummed into me: “Big picture, big picture”. Pat O’Shannessy is a barrister at the Victorian Bar.
