Budget boost for courts and justice system

Budget boost for courts and justice system

By Karin Derkley

Courts Justice

Increased funding for courts, identified by the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) as a top priority in its pre-budget submission, has been welcomed by the Victorian legal profession. Three new judges and 18 new magistrates will be appointed as part of the almost $260 million justice spending package. Fifteen magistrates will go to the Magistrates' Court and three magistrates will establish the new Bail and Remand Court in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court. Also, new law courts are on the drawing board for Werribee and Bendigo, and Echuca will get $5 million for safety and security upgrades to its law courts.
