Pesutto on law and order

Access to Justice Punishment Sentencing

Shadow Attorney General John Pesutto believes there is a "pronounced discordance" between the legal sector and the general public that could be assuaged by a stronger emphasis on deterrence and denunciation in the sentencing process. Mr Pesutto was speaking at the Law Institute of Victoria's Conference of Council. "I'm not saying our jurisprudence and our courts and our law enforcement sector should be in hock with mob rule," he said. "But we don't want to be a sector that talks to itself. We have to listen to the public as to whether our system serves the general public."
