Lawyers take a stand

Lawyers take a stand

By Christopher Smith

Practice & Procedure

Working in the public good serves us all. On 28 August 2017, on breakfast radio, the federal Immigration Minister Peter Dutton controversially declared that lawyers and law firms providing pro bono assistance to asylum seekers are “un-Australian”. This rebuke of those within our profession who generously provide their time, resources and expertise free of charge prompted the Law Council of Australia to describe Mr Dutton’s comments as “regrettable and misguided” with its president Fiona McLeod SC adding that there is “nothing more Australian than ensuring people are subject to the rule of law”.
