Employers and recruiters should consider the value a later lawyer can offer. The legal sector is a tough market for any new graduate. Later lawyers may face unintentional barriers because of the traditional pathway in the legal profession which supports the progression of young lawyers entering their first career rather than those who have had prior careers. Mentors and recruiters encourage job seekers to differentiate themselves from the pack and the best way to do this is to highlight the attributes and skills of later lawyers. Employers and recruiters should consider the potential value-add that a later lawyer can offer – in particular where later lawyers have held previous careers in sectors that provide a nexus with areas of legal practice.
