Immigration Minister Peter Dutton’s labelling of lawyers as “un-Australian” for working to provide pro-bono legal assistance to asylum seekers is inappropriate and disappointing, according to the Law Institute of Victoria.

LIV president Belinda Wilson said that “Australians respect the rule of law and value our legal rights in this country.

“Many lawyers are working incredibly hard to assist asylum seekers to ensure they get access to justice and receive the legal support they deserve.

“These lawyers are doing important work and we should be supporting them to help people in desperate circumstances,” Ms Wilson said.

This work seeks to ensure that access to justice, a key element of the rule of law, is available to the most vulnerable members of our community.

The LIV stands with the Law Council of Australia and other community organisations in rejecting the Minister’s comments.
