By Kerry O'Shea

Child Welfare Courts Leadership

Today’s appointment of lawyer Liana Buchanan as Commissioner for Children and Young People has been enthusiastically welcomed by the Law Institute of Victoria.

LIV President elect Belinda Wilson said Ms Buchanan brings to the role a wealth of experience and a commitment to access to justice for our most disadvantaged citizens.

“Liana has an outstanding record in law reform, access to justice and family violence law reform,” Ms Wilson said.

In addition to her role as CEO of the Federation of Community Legal Centres, she is also a member of the LIV’s Access to Justice Committee and LIV Awards Committee,  and was instrumental in formulating the LIV’s response to the Productivity Commission Access to Justice Arrangements Committee.

Ms Buchanan is a member of the Magistrates’ Court Family Violence Taskforce where she contributed to the Taskforce’s recommendations to the Royal Commission into Family Violence and is also a part-time Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission.

“Liana has a proven history of contributing to the community and we are sure she will be a successful advocate for the rights of children and improvements in child safety and welfare,” Ms Wilson said.
