Law Institute welcomes court upgrades

Law Institute welcomes court upgrades

By LIV Media

The LIV welcomes the Victorian state government's commitment to improving security and access in regional courthouses throughout the state.

Court upgrades were identified by the LIV prior to the budget as urgently required to ensure access to justice in the state – particularly in light of the increased number of family violence cases that are likely to be heard in the courts.

Many of the state's courthouses date back to the nineteenth century and many had not seen any improvements since the early twentieth century.

Over the past few months the Victorian state government has announced the upgrade of eight courthouses throughout the state as part of a $58.1 million investment in court safety and security. They are in Kyneton, Echuca, Colac, Maryborough, Stawell, Ararat, Bairnsdale and Korumburra. Further announcements are anticipated over the coming months.

The upgrades include separate entry and waiting areas for family violence victims, additional interview rooms and screening in courtrooms to visually separate parties, as well as general building refurbishments.

Increased security provisions include officers using handheld wands to improve safety and reduce the risk of prohibited items being brought into the court building, and roving patrols and escort services for vulnerable people, including women and children who have been victims of family violence.

LIV president Steven Sapountsis said the funding commitments were a great step towards ensuring that Victorians in regional areas had access to safe and secure facilities when they had dealings with the justice system through its courts.
