LIV recognised by the Professional Standards Councils for helping to protect members

The Law Institute of Victoria has been officially recognised for supporting eligible members to protect themselves against disciplinary complaints and professional negligence claims.

The Professional Standards Councils has formally recognised the work done by the LIV to help members under the Professional Standards legislation.

LIV Chief Executive Officer Nerida Wallace and LIV General Manager Compliance Elissa Watson have accepted a certificate from the Professional Standards Authority Chief Executive Officer Deen Saunders recognising the framework that is in place to support members.

The Professional Standards Councils and their agency, the Professional Standards Authority, are independent statutory bodies established under Professional Standards legislation in each state and territory.

The certificate is in recognition of the LIV’s Professional Standards Scheme, approved by the Professional Standards Councils from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2021.

Ms Wallace said: “It is timely that members are reminded that this scheme is in place for the LIV given recent publicity about eligibility of professional associations.”

The LIV’s Scheme is a framework for eligible members that helps reduce their exposure to disciplinary complaints and professional negligence claims in return for limiting their damages liability in the event of a successful claim against them.

The LIV works closely with the Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner, the Legal Practitioners’ Liability Committee, Professional Standards Councils and Professional Standards Authority to improve professional standards and protect consumers of professional legal services in Victoria.
