The Law Institute of Victoria will host a full week of activities in Law Week, including a rally condemning cuts to legal aid funding, a mock trial in the Supreme Court of Victoria, and our Gala Awards night recognising excellence in the profession.

The Legal Aid rally, to be held on Tuesday 17 May at 9am outside the County Court of Victoria, is part of a national campaign organised by the Law Council of Australia that calls for urgent improvements to legal assistance funding on a state and federal level.

LIV president Steven Sapountsis said the rally would call attention to the urgent need for legal aid funding that was ignored in the recent federal government budget. The Productivity Commission had recommended an additional $200 million in legal aid funding.

The rally will also draw attention to the foreshadowed cuts in federal funding to community legal centres, Aboriginal legal centres, as well as other legal assistance bodies, which Mr Sapountsis said would serve to compound the funding crisis.

The LIV’s Mock Trial, to be held on Thursday 19 May at 5pm in Banco Court at the Supreme Court, will examine the (fictional) criminal trial of DPP v Evelyn Cannon, charged with possession of cocaine. Members of the public will have the opportunity to be selected for the jury and have a hand in determining the defendant’s fate.

This year’s Law Week Panel “How can we learn from past mistakes in order to improve the future?” will be held on Friday 20 May at 12pm. Our panellists, the Honourable Justice Patrick A Keane AC of the High Court of Australia, Davies Collison Cave partner Dr Gordon Hughes and Nest Legal principal Laura Vickers will discuss how lawyers can harness technology and innovation to improve both the present and the future.

To conclude Law Week, the LIV’s Gala Awards ceremony, hosted by ABC 774 presenter Jon Faine, will be held on Friday 20 May at 6.45pm at Atlantic, Docklands. The awards recognise the achievements of lawyers throughout Victoria in advancing the legal profession, contributing to the community and demonstrating their commitment to excellence in legal practice.

The 14 award categories include Law Firm of the Year, the Access to Justice Award, Regional Lawyer of the Year, the Accredited Specialist Achievement and the Community Lawyer or Organisation of the Year.
