This year’s Government Lawyers Conference, to be held on Wednesday June 1, will focus on building understanding, expertise and skills to work with vulnerable individuals and groups.

Attorney General Martin Pakula will deliver the Keynote Presentation, addressing how the public service can respond to issues involving vulnerability in the community.

Other conference presenters include last year’s Government Lawyer of the Year Skye Rose, Rachel Elyard, junior counsel assisting the Royal Commission into Family Violence, and Michael Dolan, ethics lawyer at the Law Institute of Victoria.

LIV president Steven Sapountsis said that government lawyers play an important role in furthering  the interests of society’s most vulnerable people. “This is especially relevant today, as the public sector comes to grips with the recommendations and repercussions of the Royal Commission into Family Violence,” he said.

“The conference will help all lawyers and those dealing with government, by providing them with expertise and insights from those who work at the front line in and with the public sector,” he said.

A session on Risk Management will explore what lawyers can do to ensure that those who may be marginalised for whatever reason, are listened to and their interests protected.
Joanna Fletcher, the CEO of Women’s Legal Service Victoria and Lauren Adamson manager Seniors Law at Justice Connect, will discuss guardianship issues and how to deal with the increasing, and topical, problem of financial abuse, while Joanna Davidson of the Victorian Bar will give her perspective as assistant counsel on the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Skye Rose and Dan Nicholson of Victoria Legal Aid will discuss how to empower clients and achieve systemic change, using case studies and examining campaigns on strategic litigation.

Other sessions will discuss dealing with vexatious and difficult litigants, how technology can be used to provide access to justice and protect vulnerable clients. Michael Dolan’s interactive workshop will explore complex ethical issues in a real-life public sector scenario.
