Making the profession better

Making the profession better

By Steven Sapountsis

Leadership Wellbeing

This is my last column as LIV president (I have obstinately resisted calling it a “blog”). I came to the position without an agenda, but worked out quickly that I wanted to do what I could to make practising law better and easier for our members, to make practitioners better lawyers, and to increase diversity and encourage inclusion in the profession. Only time will tell if I have advanced those aims. There remain serious issues facing the profession generally, and the LIV in particular. For the former, the changing nature of our business and the competition from non-lawyers are prime among them. The challenges for the LIV and some of the more serious questions it faces are hinted at in these particular projects that stand out for next year and beyond: the LIV Council has established a taskforce to report on the desirability of the LIV’s involvement in the regulation of the profession and the LIV’s registration as a charity under the stewardship of CEO Nerida Wallace, the LIV has embarked on a significant “digital transformation” of the organisation the LIV’s financial report for the year ended 30 June 2016 foreshadows a move towards a greater “commercialisation” of the LIV’s activities the LIV Council has set up a Building Working Group to critically and expertly assess the issue of the suitability of the LIV building and to advise Council on any options to be explored to address any identified shortcomings. I expect that once Council is advised, there will be proposals put for the consideration of the members.
