Hospitality and learning are the currencies for the Commonwealth Law Conference

Hospitality and learning are the currencies for the Commonwealth Law Conference

By LIV President Steven Sapountsis

The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne were widely hailed as the best games ever. At least part of the reason for their success was the gracious hospitality shown to visitors by most Victorians, and especially by the team of Games volunteers. In the legal sphere, we have an opportunity to again show the world the hospitality, culture and learning that can be found in Melbourne when we hold the 2017 Commonwealth Law Conference. The LIV is delighted to host the conference in conjunction with the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. The LIV last hosted the event in 2003. The conference will be held at the Melbourne Convention Centre from 20-24 March 2017 and is expected to attract thousands of delegates from more than 50 countries. It is important that we also have good showing of local lawyers. The theme of the conference, Thriving in a global world: building on the rule of law, presents a unique canvas to consider legal issues in our globalised world that both innovate and challenge practising lawyers. I have previously written about the benefits of attending international legal conferences. The opportunities for making valuable contacts for international work in Australia or Australian work internationally are very real. The chance to learn from and inform international guests is also very real across a broad range of practice and interest areas. This is especially so as the conference program is topical, current and expert. It covers topics in the following areas: corporate and commercial, constitutionalism, human rights & the rule of law, legal & judicial profession and contemporary legal topics. It is the ideal venue to meet and discuss topics relevant to your professional area of interest.
