Law Week: Q&A with Victoria Law Foundation's Joh Kirby

Law Week: Q&A with Victoria Law Foundation's Joh Kirby

By Belinda Wilson

Access to Justice Networking

LIV president Belinda Wilson caught up with Victoria Law Foundation executive director Joh Kirby to talk all things Law Week...

BW: Tell me Joh, what is Law Week?

JK: Law Week is a festival of events that makes learning about the law easy. Law Week aims to engage interest and inform our community. We have everything from legal information sessions, mock trials, debates, plays and musical performances. Everything is informative and engaging. It runs from 15–21 May.

BW: Why Law Week?

JK: Why not? But seriously, we think that Law Week makes a significant contribution to helping Victorians feel more comfortable with the law, and that is the feedback we get from the people attending.

Unfortunately, most people's first contact with the law can be when they have a legal problem. They can feel really ill-equipped to know what to do. We want to change that by giving Victorians the opportunity to find out about the law when they are not in a stressful situation, to make them feel more informed and more likely to take action when faced with a legal problem. We think that offering a range of events that are both entertaining and informative is a good start.

BW: Out of the 160 events, what are your top five picks?

JK: It's a hard choice but here goes:

  • 15–19 May – Law Week festival hub in Fed Square is a great place to start your Law Week visit. The staff can help you choose the right event and from about 10am to 2pm each day there are a range of free talks.
  • 16 May – Mock trial – courting solutions – come and see a mock trial in action that looks at alternative ways of dispute resolution.
  • 18 May – Mock trial in the Banco Court presented by the LIV and VicBar – see the best of the profession in action in the beautiful surrounds of the Banco Court at the Supreme Court of Victoria.
  • 19–20 May – Bendigo: Talking Justice – a great program of speakers to get you thinking about social and justice issues in regional Victoria.
  • 20 May – Courts Open Day – a great opportunity to see the courts in action, go behind the scenes, see a mock trial and ask lawyers and judges lots of questions.
