Let’s face it – like it or not, we’re all biased. On the train, at the pub and even in the workplace, we rapidly assess a situation by applying stereotypes or ‘stories’ to a situation and people to help us make sense of them. Don't believe me? How many times have you met someone from Fitzroy and thought "hipster"? Or immediately assumed that someone will be at the snow on the weekend because of the football team they follow (we all know Melbourne supporters prefer skiing to seeing their team play at the G). It’s a basic human trait that often just helps us to feel safe and comfortable. However, these unconscious biases stop being funny when they lead to workplaces and board tables that are sadly lacking in diversity - of gender, ethnicity, sexuality and thought. This lack of diversity has now been shown to be financially detrimental of individual organisations and the Australian economy as a whole.
