The LIV sent a letter to the Prime Minister advocating for Parliament to legislate in favour of marriage equality. The letter outlined the LIV’s concerns with a plebiscite, noting that the government has the Constitutional power to amend the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth), and LIV’s views on the inappropriateness of holding a public vote on the rights of a minority group to equality before the law, as well as the substantial unnecessary cost.
