LIV Young Lawyers supports better workplace protections for early lawyers

LIV Young Lawyers supports better workplace protections for early lawyers

By LIV Young Lawyers

Workplace Relations Young Persons

LIV Young Lawyers has supported the proposal for the modern award to be expanded to include early lawyers in private practice, including the establishment of a minimum wage.

The LIV was asked to contribute to the discussion regarding a Modern Award for Early Career Lawyers in Private Practice and inform the Law Council of Australia’s (LCA) policy position on this matter.

The LIV YL considers this cohort is comparatively more vulnerable to financial exploitation, mental health crises, wage theft, and has reduced negotiating power, compared with their peers with more postadmission experience, and would disproportionately benefit from the protections a modern award could provide.
