Careers in Law: Gemma Hazmi

Careers in Law: Gemma Hazmi

By Gemma Hazmi

Legal Biography

Welcome to the LIV Young Lawyers monthly feature blog “Careers in Law”. This month the YL interviewed Gemma Hazmi. Name: Gemma Hazmi. Organisation: Law Institute of Victoria. Position: Senior Policy Lawyer, Criminal Law. Why did you decide to pursue a legal career? I’d always been fascinated by the law and social justice issues. My grandmother (who I greatly admire) was a career missionary, practising exclusively in representing disadvantaged women in family violence proceedings. I didn’t go straight into doing a law degree, though. I am actually a “later lawyer”. I worked in human resources after completing my BA, then moved to the UK. While I was there, and pregnant with my second child (perhaps a hormonal decision), I decided to follow in my grandmother’s footsteps. It took nine long years, but I got there in the end. I also had a third child in my third or fourth year of study (crazy, I know).
