LIV Young Lawyers and Orange Sky blanket drive

LIV Young Lawyers and Orange Sky blanket drive

By Georgia Smith

Voluntary Associations/Pro Bono Young Persons

In a first for the LIV Young Lawyers Community Issues Committee, it successfully partnered with Orange Sky, a mobile laundry service for the disadvantaged and homeless, to provide donations of blankets and sleeping bags from members of the legal profession to those most in need. On 13 September, LIV Young Lawyers members Stefani Janson and John Stack attended an Orange Sky evening at the Queen Victoria Markets to deliver more than 25 sleeping bags and six street swags, all kindly donated during the Young Lawyers Community Issues Committee members drive across September. Orange Sky provides free mobile laundry facilities for people experiencing homelessness. With more than 1000 volunteers and 20 services across Australia, Orange Sky supports more than six tonnes of laundry washing and drying each week. Our LIV Young Lawyers representatives were met with a warm reception from the Orange Sky volunteers and their service users, and enjoyed some great conversations (after assuring them the LIV was not the law coming to get them). Our members listened and heard stories from people experiencing homelessness, living in half way houses, and those who have been able to move into private accommodation. Many people enquired as to where the donations had come from, and were pleased and excited to see and hear that the LIV was contributing in such a meaningful and practical way to the community. The LIV Young Lawyers expresses its sincere thanks to Stefani Janson, a key driver behind this new initiative, who worked tirelessly to gather donations and encourage committee members to participate, and John Stack and his colleagues who were excellent in their work securing and arranging the purchase of size street swags made by prisoner inmates in Queensland. We would also like to acknowledge the Community Issues Committee members Natasha Ozolins, Emma Muse and Leah Parente for their involvement in the drive and willingness to assist. We also had one very generous donor in the community (who wishes to remain anonymous) who donated a whopping 23 brand new sleeping bags to this cause. Pictured below are some of the wonderful Orange Sky volunteers and Jack, who was a happy recipient of a new sleeping bag. Our thanks and appreciation go out to those members of the legal profession who donated to this important initiative, and we hope to see you again for the 2019 drive.
