Editorial: Building Resilience

Editorial: Building Resilience

By Alice Cooney & Kate Wild

“Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.” Robert Louis Stevenson Tests of resilience occur often in the law as you are dealing with consequences and variables that are outside your control. The trick to being resilient is to know that there isn’t one – it’s a skill that can be developed and should be continually worked on as you progress through your career. Just like the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the famous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, practising as a lawyer can have aspects of light and shade. The variability of legal practice is one of the things that lawyers love most about it, but it can be a really challenging profession to navigate. This edition of the YLJ supports a culture of wellness in the law, and addresses how we can all contribute to a resilient and healthy legal profession. We are very proud to share the personal stories and practical tips contained in this edition as they are a testament to the shared wealth of knowledge in the legal profession about this topic.
