A fresh look at careers “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it,” Steve Jobs said. Taking a fresh look at your career in the law and its trajectory is not something that should be reserved for young lawyers. The idea that you commit to one career is outdated and, while that is exciting, the number of options can be overwhelming. A commitment to a profession for life does not mandate one career – the opportunities to work as a lawyer are broad and varied, allowing for lawyers to have multiple areas of specialisation in their working lifetime. So while you carry the title of lawyer (until it changes to barrister, judge or justice), at your core, there are endless options for how your career may be structured. This edition of the YLJ is wonderfully resourced with ideas, commentary and practical tips to help with career planning. It has something for everyone, whether you are contemplating a career in law, in the middle of your degree or have enjoyed a few years in practice.
