Finding Your Voice

Finding Your Voice

By Radu Catrina

Doyle’s Guide recommended counsel Paul Glass has some advice for young lawyers about what they can do to enhance their skills in the courtroom. There are innumerable challenges in the first few years of your legal career, and perhaps none is greater than the tyranny of the courtroom. The anxiety never really goes away, says Doyle’s Guide recommended counsel Paul Glass. “Understand that the anxiety is a necessary ingredient,” he says, “because it provides motivation to do the work and keeps you focused. A combination of elements drive the anxiety, from the public performance aspect to trying to satisfy your instructor, but of course ultimately it’s knowing that your efforts have a direct impact on the lives of your clients. “A false impression juniors have is that people who are good at advocacy are not anxious. In fact, they are all anxious. The trick is that they have found a way to manage their anxiety in a way that is productive. An advocate who says they are no longer anxious is either lying or they don’t care about their work anymore.” Practising mindfulness is a technique Paul incorporates into his own preparation. “I practise piano. I find it puts me in an almost meditative state, and I access a different emotional energy. I feel refreshed afterwards.”
