Immigration matters

Immigration matters

By Shalini Mendis

Finding your feet in the legal world takes time. Senior lawyer at Carina Ford Immigration Lawyers, Leah Perkins talked to the YLJ about her career path. How did you get to where you are now? I have always had an interest in the rights of migrants and refugees. During university, I volunteered at migrant resource centres and community legal centres, and participated in international internships. The difficulty was finding paid legal work during university. I applied for a paralegal position with Carina Ford around my third year at university, but was unsuccessful due to my lack of legal experience. I took on the feedback, built up my experience, and successfully re-applied the next year. After a few years I was offered a junior lawyer position and have been with the firm since. I am also chair of the LIV Refugee Law Reform Committee, the Legacy Caseload Working Group and the Citizenship Working Group.
