Junior lawyers in the modern world

Junior lawyers in the modern world

By Edward Cormie

The YLJ asked four senior lawyers from a range of difference practices what attributes they look for in junior lawyers. Commercial CBD John Malon is a principal of Hive Legal, a contemporary law firm committed to crafting innovative solutions for clients, where he specialises in financial services and corporate law. Previously, John was a partner of King & Wood Mallesons. What does it take for a junior lawyer to succeed in a world where technology is evolving at a great pace, and increasingly clients are demanding more cost effective and innovative solutions? Being an excellent black letter lawyer with strong technical skills is no longer enough to ensure success – you also need to have an inquiring mind and to seek out solutions that may not be the obvious or traditional way of doing things. This involves really listening to your client (lawyers often talk but don’t listen), so that you truly understand their objectives. A key to client satisfaction is putting yourself in their shoes and presenting solutions that are not only legally correct, but also practical and understandable from the client’s perspective. The focus should always be on your client.
