Connecting and investing

Networking

Networking has benefits beyond unlocking career opportunities. Networking is essentially relationship building and connecting with people. It is the process of investing in the creation of meaningful professional and personal relationships as opposed to simply indexing a "network" of names of influential people you know. Networking is as much a part of finding a new career as writing applications and attending interviews. Acquiring networking skills takes practice, and can be intimidating at the start of your career when you may feel that you have less to offer. These are some important things I have learned. Networking does not just happen at "networking events". Any chance you get to meet other professionals is an opportunity to develop a new relationship for the future. Consider attending events and functions that align with your own values or interests. Locate and activate your memberships in professional associations and interest groups that you are a member of, or would like to be. Attend events and seek out the organiser or convenor, speak with who you are sitting with, introduce yourself to the keynote speaker at the conclusion of the event.
