Young Persons

Helping a friend one night turned into an unexpected business venture for Jason Themisoklis. How did you get to where you are now? I graduated from Monash University with a bachelor of laws and a bachelor of arts. Then I attended the Leo Cussen Centre for Law. I worked as a law clerk at Slater and Gordon for four years in the superannuation and insurance disability claims practice, and have recently started as a generalist lawyer at Wilckens Roche Lawyers. I began to develop before I started working at Slater and Gordon. What motivated you to start your own project while still in legal practice? I had difficulty finding a position in law at the start. I was becoming frustrated with the lack of junior lawyer opportunities. One evening I helped a friend write a letter for a minor matter involving a denied application for an industry licence. I helped them prepare a chronology of events in what was a long and very structured letter. They thought I did a good job and suggested I should do it as a business. I laughed it off initially. “What would I call it,” I said. We both had a moment of realisation, and I registered the domain name straight away and began to develop the business from scratch. I saw a gap in the market for people who don’t need legal advice but need help writing letters. They may not be in a position to spend hundreds of dollars for a lawyer to draft a simple letter. provides affordable and professionally written letters for everyday Australians. What challenges have you encountered and how have you overcome them? When I started I was everything – web developer, copywriter, admin, advertiser, customer service. It was difficult to get up and running while trying to find work in the legal profession at the same time. Right after launched in August 2012, I found full time work at Slater and Gordon. It is a challenge to have balance in your life because you want your business to do well. I was working 9-5.30, then coming home and working until midnight answering emails and taking care of business. Things are easier now as there is less advertising required and I have improved business processes with templates and proformas so it takes less time. It was also a challenge to make sure that I wasn't crossing any legal boundaries and offering legal advice. I was lucky to be able to bounce ideas off my mentors.
