A world of experience

Competition Continuing Legal Education Students

Travel can give you a competitive edge in your legal career. As a final year law student I am constantly thinking about what I could be doing to distinguish myself from my peers as we prepare for entry into the legal profession. Throughout my degree I have realised that skills required to excel in the profession go beyond the confines of the classroom. Traditional attitudes and approaches to the practice of law are becoming a thing of the past as globalisation and international exposure are fast becoming the norm. Think innovatively Young lawyers need to be innovative to excel in an incredibly competitive, qualified and ambitious profession. One way to gain valuable insights and skills is to capitalise on the travel opportunities that your university offers. Having international experience is an excellent way to challenge yourself outside of your comfort zone, develop cross-cultural communication skills and gain a global perspective. It is common knowledge that when recruiting junior lawyers, law firms generally have high expectations of excellent grades and practical experience. However, if you review the criteria for clerkships and graduate positions today, you will find that law firms are evolving and prioritising the importance of a global mindset, and progressively seeking employees who have global skills and experience. Travel does not have to be an extra-curricular activity meticulously planned during your university breaks, as many law firms are now encouraging students to gain their study credits overseas to broaden their skills and experience. As an added incentive, a large range of programs offer university funding, so you will not have to break the bank to hop on a plane, explore the world and enhance your skill-set and career prospects.
