Defending human rights in Israel

Defending human rights in Israel

By Trang Chau

Refugee lawyer from WEstjustice, Alice McBurney, speaks to the YLJ about her fellowship experience supporting the works of Palestinian and Israeli NGOs in defending human rights and fostering human development in Palestinian communities. What international work have you engaged in? What was your role and what did it entail? I have carried out international legal work in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 2014 I accepted a position as a law fellow through Palestine Works with the Mossawa Centre – the Advocacy Center for Arab Citizens in Israel, based in Haifa, a city in the north of Israel. As a law fellow, I engaged in legal research and writing on the situation of Palestinian citizens of Israel as part of Mossawa’s international advocacy team. I authored a report on the impacts of Israel’s law and policy on Palestinian Arab citizens. The report was launched at Mossawa's annual international conference on the legal status of the Arab community in Israel and it has been used by the organisation as an advocacy tool and resource. I also co-authored a report submitted by the Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem and Palestine Works to the Commission of Inquiry, established by the UN Human Rights Council.
