Building supreme skills

Building supreme skills

By Zoe Vise

Supreme Court lawyer Fiona Halloran shares her tips on developing and maintaining key legal skills, through career transitions and beyond. How did you get to where you are now as a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Victoria? I began my legal career in a boutique law firm in Melbourne CBD while undertaking my law degree. I commenced initially as a receptionist, then onto paralegal and later as a junior lawyer on admission to practice. I was fortunate enough to complete most of my own court appearances. I was also grateful to have been mentored by some established lawyers. I then took a year off to travel. On my return, I secured a position as a lawyer in a suburban firm, practising in both family and criminal law. Then I moved into my current role as a lawyer within the Senior Master’s office of the Supreme Court of Victoria. It is an incredibly varied, challenging and rewarding job. What learning and development tools did you find most helpful during your transition from student to lawyer? Going from student to lawyer can be overwhelming. I think back to my admission day and feeling some strange sense of invincibility. But this was short lived. The day following my admission, I completed my first court appearance and I can assure you, I was swiftly brought back down to earth after what was hardly an Oscar-worthy performance.
