Future ready

Future ready

By Anthony Loncaric

Young lawyers at the Office of Public Prosecutions are embracing learning and development opportunities around new technology to further their careers and influence the future direction of the organisation. Solicitor Jaclyn Dunham (above) has succeeded in improving work practices at the OPP by using advanced PDF software to develop a fully interactive brief of evidence for Victoria Police and a prosecution brief for Counsel appearing in court. This initiative has reduced time spent on brief preparation, allowing solicitors time to focus on legal support and adding value to their cases. It has also led to significant reductions in paper usage in preparing criminal cases for court. Ms Dunham, who was admitted to practice in 2014 and joined the OPP a year later, said she felt fortunate to be given the opportunity to learn how to use the software and tailor it to the needs of solicitors. “I’ve got no real background in tech but after some training on using the software I was able to run with it to make it my own,” she said. “I have really enjoyed pushing myself to learn and develop my skillset with technology. In the legal industry you don’t always get a chance to put your own special touch on something but I have been able to do that.”
