You’ve been asked to run your first professional development session – what do you do? Continuing professional development (CPD) programs are a vital component of being a lawyer, providing learning opportunities about the law. But with so much involved – the content, presenters, even food – for new educators, knowing where to start can be daunting. It doesn't have to be. Ask yourself, “What does my audience need to know?” Whether you’re in charge of one CPD session or a whole program, knowing the answer ensures that your preparation sets you on the right path. Does your audience need an introduction to evidence or to learn practical skills? Do they need Q&A sessions on youth justice or book recommendations? The needs of your audience will inform your learning objectives, and determine appropriate content, materials, and processes.
