How to stay ahead of the game

How to stay ahead of the game

By Edward Cormie

Elizabeth Guerra-Stolfa is Rigby Cooke Lawyers’ litigation and dispute resolution group leader. She specialises in complex superior court litigation, specialist tribunal litigation, Royal Commission hearings, mediation and alternative dispute resolution. She talked to the YLJ about staying up to date with the law. When did you start keeping current with developments in the law? I started straight away and I am still doing it today. You have to keep current with your area of law, especially in litigation where court rules change and procedures are updated. A legal practitioner needs to stay abreast of changes in the law and in procedure. As a litigator, you have to remain interested, focused, sharp and up to date. Your working day is spent on a knife-edge dealing with opposing parties on various matters, and you need to be on your game. Litigation is largely about strategy and one cannot afford to be caught out by a lack of knowledge of the process or the law.
