Check your contract

By Phoebe Blank

Young lawyers may be surprised to know that once you are admitted to practice you are not covered by an award. Securing your first job in a legal career is a great achievement. If you were working in the legal profession before admission, you might have been covered by the Legal Professionals Award 2010, which detailed your working conditions and pay rates. You might not realise that as an admitted lawyer, you are not covered by an award. Instead, your working conditions and pay rates will be set out in your employment contract and/or an enterprise agreement and you will be entitled to the national minimum wage and the National Employment Standards (NES).
