Membership Categories & Eligibility Requirements

LIV membership is divided into three categories: practising full membership, affiliate membership and student membership. These categories are further divided into membership types, each of which have clearly defined eligibility requirements. Use the information below to determine which membership type is most suitable for you.

Practising Full Membership Requirements

Firm Member: Hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate and work mainly in a firm or as a sole practitioner. Must participate in or apply for exemption from the Professional Standards Scheme

Corporate Lawyer Member: Hold a current Victorian Corporate or Employee Practising Certificate and work mainly as in-house counsel for a business

Government Lawyer Member: Hold a current Victorian Government or Employee Practising Certificate and work mainly for a government organisation

Legal Aid Member: Hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate with a 'Government' Practising Certificate type and are employed at Victorian Legal Aid

New Solicitor Member: Admitted to practice after 1 January 2019 and hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate. Must participate in or apply for exemption from the Professional Standards Scheme (if eligible)

Honorary Member: 50 years continuous membership of the LIV or awarded to individuals as decided by the LIV Council

Community Legal Centre Lawyer Member: Hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate and are employed by, or volunteer with an LIV member CLC as your main source of legal work

Affiliate Membership Requirements

Barrister Member: Hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate and engage in legal practice solely as a barrister

Judicial Member: Employed in the judiciary

Interstate Lawyer Member: Hold a current Australian Practising Certificate issued outside of Victoria

Legal Practice Support Member: Employed to support a legal practise or practitioner, such as a paralegal, practice manager, HR professional or law librarian

Non-Practising Member: Have previously been admitted to practice law; however, do not hold a current Australian Practising Certificate

'Other' Member: Demonstrate a link to the legal sector not captured in an existing membership type

Overseas Lawyer Member: Have previously been admitted to practice law; however, reside overseas and do not hold a current Australian Practising Certificate

Retired Member: Have previously been admitted to practice law; however, have retired from practice and do not hold a current Australian Practising Certificate

Graduate Member: Have completed a law degree but are not yet admitted to practice

Student Membership Requirements

Student Member: Studying law at an undergraduate or postgraduate level and have not yet been admitted to practice law
