Animal welfare – why should we care?
Animal welfare – why should we care?

 YL 18 Jun 2015

The YLS Community Issues Committee has formed a sub-committee to look at various issues surrounding animal law and animal welfare. How to talk to your clients about money

18 Jun 2015

“Don't mention the war. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right.”

We avoid, we hedge, we duck and weave and, when we can finally no longer avoid it, we mumble something under our breath or hand over a lengthy costs agreement and then scuttle away in embarrassment.

Surviving in the law with an unpronounceable name

10 Jun 2015

You are standing before the Judge for your first “real” appearance. Your palms are sweaty, your face is flushed and there are so many handwritten notes on your once perfect outline of submissions that it’s almost impossible to read. The Judge looks at you, looks at the appearance sheet, then looks up at you again and says, “Yes Ms…errr…” Big sigh of relief. This is familiar territory. You’ve been repeating, explaining and putting up with atrocious pronunciations of your name since the first day of primary school.

Preparing for your performance review

04 Jun 2015

Winter is coming. Which means so are performance reviews.

My views on performance reviews have developed over my career - from a state of mild confusion to a bewilderment at bureaucracy; from discomfort and embarrassment to an appreciation of hidden logic.

How to structure a winning argument

03 Jun 2015

The ability to win an argument – and argue generally – is often seen as one of those qualities that most lawyers possess (much to the annoyance of our partners and friends). Many of us were taught from a very young age that being able to argue your point is an important skill. Remember all of those persuasive essays in high school?
