The Independent Contractors Act 2006 and an update on asset protection were the topics discussed at a recent Eastern Suburbs Law Association meeting.

Association president and BMR Lawyers sole practitioner Ron Rowe said members increasingly realised they were able to accumulate continuing professional development units through their suburban association’s monthly meetings.

“It is also an opportunity for them to associate with fellow practitioners, although that is still a message that many younger practitioners need to take on,” he said.

Barrister Jeremy Smith, who has an interest in industrial relations and employment law, gave an overview of the Independent Contractors Act, while the dinner speaker was Pitcher Partners partner David Vasudevan.

Mr Vasudevan, who is a partner in the business recovery and insolvency division, spoke to members about asset protection, including superannuation and the Bankruptcy Act.

About 50 people attended the meeting on 17 May.
