LIV Council update

The LIV Council meets each month to decide issues of importance to members, the legal profession and the community.

At the 29 January meeting, the first to be chaired by 2015 LIV president Katie Miller, Council discussed the LIV’s position on numbers of law graduates and their entry into the profession.

The LIV has been actively consulting with its membership, in particular with the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) and also employers, to establish and analyse law graduate recruitment statistics and trends. This is in an effort to unpack the complex issue which has been described as an “oversupply” or “crowded marketplace for law graduates”.

The LIV is in the process of developing a range of strategies to address the changing nature of the legal profession which, combined with other factors such as a slowing economy, is considered to be affecting take-up of law graduates. The LIV acknowledges that this issue will not be resolved by any single solution but by a range of measures.

As such, the LIV is working alongside other state and territory law societies and also the Law Council of Australia on the issue which remains a critical one for law students, law graduates and the succession of the profession.

The LIV has an existing range of support services for its YLS and will continue to participate in the discussion on the issue of supply and demand of law graduates while it works to develop solutions.

Work will be done through the LIV’s Future Focus Group with an emphasis on exploring the issue, conducting research and addressing it.

Further to work undertaken by the Future Focus Group, the LIV promotes the various opportunities available to law graduates including small practices in suburban and regional areas, in-house counsel roles, careers in government and the NGO sector.

The LIV will be working diligently to equip our young lawyer members with the information and tools they require to define and launch their legal career.
