I want to take this opportunity to thank members and staff for their support, hard efforts and great achievements throughout 2017.

We’ve had our challenges this year but we have achieved a great deal for the Law Institute of Victoria and our members. We can all be proud of what we have accomplished in 2017.

Some of the great achievements for 2017 include:

  • Membership numbers remain strong (around 19,000) with growth in practising lawyers in legal firms up over 500
  • Our CPD and education programs are highly regarded and sought after, and we now have more focus on access for our regional and rural based colleagues with on-line due early in 2018
  • Our funding is a key focus area and our third-party revenues are growing, and we now have stronger internal financial controls. The LIV received a big tick of approval for our full year audit
  • Strong lobbying has significantly reduced the proposed steep increases in Practising Certificate fees, and we advocated intensively to reduce the cost of regulation in Victoria
  • We continue to focus on stronger corporate governance structures
  • Our modernisation program continues, the digital programs are rolling out, and despite change across the organisation overall staff morale remains extremely positive and strong. Some excellent people have joined our organisation and we continue to reshape our workforce to better meet the needs of the LIV, membership and community
  • Our digital transformation program continues across the organisation, such as Laserfiche and BambooHR, and stronger IT controls
  • New processes and procedures are driving up demand for the services of our LIV Costs Lawyers
  • We’re doing excellent work in Professional Practice and Compliance, and we have a stronger working relationship with the Victorian Legal Services Board
  • Our 1350 members across 13 sections and 90 committees are doing tremendous work for the profession and the Victorian community. Our submissions continue to make a difference, including the Bail Act review, Access to Justice review and the Voluntary Assisted Dying report
  • The LIV voice continues to grow across traditional media and social media
  • Our brilliant 21st Century Women Leaders in Law “Vanity Fair” style composite photograph and feature in the Law Institute Journal attracted significant mainstream media attention
  • Around 40,000 referral letters have been offered via the Find Your Lawyers referral service
  • We’ve expanded the LIV library services online making it easier for remote and regional access, together with 24/7 subscriptions available to members
  • Our staffing internal survey shows high levels of people feeling valued and engaged.  The Leadership Team and I will continue to focus on your suggestions to improve what we all do

Next year will also have its challenges and opportunities. We’ll have to be at the top of our game. We have a full CPD program in March, our membership campaign in May, we’re pressing ahead with a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and of course it is an election year in Victoria and we’ll be advocating hard for the our members and the Victorian legal profession.

Also, the sale process for 470 Bourke Street will also get into full swing in the new year. The LIV has just appointed Colliers International as our exclusive real estate agent to sell our building and they will be working closely with the Leadership Team, General Counsel Carmelina Quatela, our building consultant Barry Meehan and our advisers Charter Keck Cramer. The sales campaign kicks off in February and you’ll see plenty of advertising and media coverage as part of the marketing campaign.

Like you, I’m looking forward to an exciting and busy year in 2018 and the start of a new era for the LIV.

Thank you all for your dedication to the LIV and for everything that you do to assist the legal profession and the Victorian community.
